Dance classes in Athens, Ohio

Dance classes for every way of moving

Three children and their teacher stretch their arms out wide in a movement class at Jete, a neighborhood studio on North Court Street. We teach creative movement, ballet and tap, and jazz and hip hop, and we run an adaptive class for dancers who use wheelchairs, walkers or other ways of moving.

  • Ages 3 to 14

Adaptive dance

A class built around the dancers in it

Dancers use wheelchairs, walkers or other ways of moving, and every step has more than one way to be danced.

Adaptive dance has its own place on the schedule and its own teachers. The class opens in a circle, moves through a warm-up and a floor combination, and ends with a dance the group shares. Tell us about your child at the trial class, in person or by phone.

  • Ages 6 to 14, in two groups

  • Classes of up to 8

  • A ramp, wide doors and one level floor

The teachers

Three teachers share the week at Jete, and each has a background check and CPR and first aid training.

  • Mariyah Embry, director and creative movement teacher, leaning on a shelf of folded blankets in the studio

    Mariyah Embry

Director, creative movement and adaptive dance

Mariyah founded Jete and directs the studio. She teaches creative movement, leads the adaptive class, and is the teacher you meet at the door of a trial class.

  • Shalini Nambiar, jazz and hip hop teacher, seated on the studio floor

    Shalini Nambiar

Jazz and hip hop, adaptive class assistant

Shalini teaches the jazz and hip hop classes. In the adaptive class she works on the floor beside Mariyah, so every dancer has a teacher close by.

  • Willem Bakker, ballet and tap teacher, in a navy cardigan at the barre

    Willem Bakker

    Ballet and tap

Willem teaches the ballet and tap classes. He keeps the barre at child height and teaches one new combination a month.

What families write

“My daughter likes the Monday ballet class because the barre is low and the combination is short. She practices it on the stairs at home.”

Naina P.Parent of a seven-year-old

“We came to the adaptive class on a Tuesday. Mariyah asked my son how he likes to move before she asked anything else, and he has asked about Thursday ever since.”

Kyndall B.Parent of a ten-year-old

“I waited in the family room with a book and heard the music through the door. She came out humming it and asked what day it was.”

Hayeon L.Parent of a five-year-old
