Adaptive dance

A class for dancers who move their own way

Ages 6 to 14, planned around the dancers in the room. Wheelchairs and walkers are part of the dance.

The class opens in a circle, moves through a warm-up and a floor combination, and ends with a dance the group shares. The group picks the music. Mariyah Embry teaches, and Shalini Nambiar works on the floor beside her, so no dancer waits long for a teacher.

Before the first class

  • What the class is

Music, movement and room to do each step your own way. Every step comes with more than one way to dance it, and we plan the floor around the chairs and walkers in it.

  • Who teaches it

Mariyah Embry leads, with Shalini Nambiar beside her on the floor. Both have a background check and CPR and first aid training.

  • Telling us about your child

Come to a trial class and tell us in person, or call the studio first. We ask what would help your dancer there, never on the website form.

Questions about the class

Can a grown-up stay?

Yes. A parent or helper is welcome to stay in the studio or wait in the family room, whichever suits your dancer.

Does my dancer need to have danced before?

No. The class starts where the dancers are.

What if my child uses a wheelchair or a walker?

Bring it as usual. The front studio has a level floor, and the entrance has a ramp and doors wide enough for a wheelchair.

How do we join?

Book a trial class from the schedule. A waitlist holds a place when a group is full, and we call as soon as a place opens.
